After the Civil War, he was a professor of geology and curator of the museum of Illinois Wesleyan University at Bloomington, Illinois. He was well known in Illinois by his lectures on science.
He served for 13 years (1881-1894) as the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey. Powell died in 1902.
